You may be rolling your eyes, saying “Yeah, Right!” or “I just don’t have the time” as we talk in this article about contributing our resource of time to a worthy cause. I know I’ve certainly said “I just don’t have the time” ad nauseam over the years. However, a small contribution of your time can do wonders, not only for the recipients, but also for yourself, your self worth and your sense of accomplishment.
Opening your heart and giving your time to a worthy cause is a great way to share the abundance that we have been given. It’s also a great way to create closer family relationships and to strengthen work teams. All of our journeys throughout the world also give us the great opportunity to share our valuable gift of time in many cities and/or countries.
Giving your time does something else very important . . . It puts our crazy traveling life in better perspective. Just try to be really upset that you didn’t get upgraded to first class as you’re sitting next to a Make-A-Wish family with a seriously-ill child. They’re all excited to be on their very first plane ride going on a trip of a lifetime and they don’t care what seat they’re in! And feel the appreciation of all the great restaurants you enjoy as you mentor a troubled teenager who has never, ever eaten in a sit-down restaurant. You’ll more than likely find that this perspective-adjustment puts a more positive view on your future travel woes.
Knowing that you have little time to begin with, here are some time-saving resources for locating a volunteer opportunity that’s just right for you, your family, or your team:
Volunteermatch.org is a leader in the nonprofit world dedicated to helping everyone find a great place to volunteer. The organization offers a variety of online services to support a community of nonprofit, volunteer and business leaders committed to civic engagement. Be sure to check out USAFreedomCorps.gov and NetworkForGood.org for other sites that offer volunteering opportunities.
And if you do find that you have a few weeks of time for volunteering, and would like to do so all over the world, look into VolunteerInternational.org.
Certainly there are thousands of other local, national and global communities that would appreciate any time that you can offer them. These few online resources can get your ideas started on how you can give back, even just minutes a week or month. The rewards will most certainly last you a lifetime!
If you’re interested in joining forces with other Smart Women Travelers in cities throughout the world to donate time together, post an entry in the Community in the ‘Giving Back to the Global Community’ section.
