Hotel Review: JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro

The music of Barry Manilow plays over and over in my head as I walk along the famous Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. While I hum along to this old tune, I enter the beautiful lobby of the JW Marriott. Piano music is in the background. A gong on the xylophone is sounded by the Front Desk to hail a bellman. It was a very warm welcome to the hotel.

My room is on the 5th floor and is an inside room (“no view” in hotel terms). Yes, Drapes on a window give me hope for an ocean view but alas I am looking down at the lobby. (Spring for a beach view if you can.) While my Marriott Platinum Premier status typically offers me an upgrade, Bill Clinton and his entourage are in the house so no upgrade is immediately available. I am, however, offered a beach view room starting the second night, but by then I am settled in and do not want to change rooms for my remaining night.

Both breakfast and happy hour are included in the rate. The executive lounge on the top floor is very small and very crowded (very!). The food selection is ample — and the beach view is stunning. I would have loved to have sat outside on the upper floor’s pool area but rain every day kept me indoors. A fitness center is also on the top floor.

The hotel slippers are my favorite item. The black man-size Brazilian-made flip-flops (no, not Havaianas, though very thick and durable) are removed out of the slipper bag and left near my bed. The maid realizes that it is only a female in the room so she leaves me a pair of white smaller-size flip-flops. Perfect! Both pairs traveling home with me. My husband and I will both remember my trip to the JW Marriott in Rio every time we wear these. Best hotel slippers ever!

Nice comfy and clean room, great breakfast, beautiful lobby.

Gong the xylophone when Barry Manilow’s tune is being played on the piano and I’ll come running!
