Must-Have Accessories for Business Trips

It’s the night before an early morning flight and, as I’m packing up my laptop tote and getting ready for the mad dash, I ensure that I have these accessories:

If I’m flying

  • Laptop or iPad, fully charged, with charging cords
  • Noise-cancelling earbuds
  • A few magazines to start reading before take-off (this helps clean up my pile of mail from home)
  • My Planner, so I can get down the tasks for the upcoming week
  • Protein bar, peanuts, or other munchables
  • Sunglasses
  • Birthday cards, thank you cards or other notes to write while on the plane (yes, I still like writing handwritten cards)
  • Stamps
  • Cash (enough for taxis and a few meals, in case charge cards aren’t accepted and a car sharing service is not available)
  • Ginger essential oil for calming my stomach if the flight is rough
  • Miscellaneous items (Kleenex, lip balm, gum, breath mints, my favorite teabags)
  • Copies of my driver’s license and passport, both on my phone in a password-protected app and back home in a safe
  • Free drink coupons (if the airlines send them to me) for a glass of wine at the end of the week
  • Pashmina Shawl

For longer flights, I’ll add

  • Travel pillow
  • Eye shade
  • Comfortable socks to keep my feet warm
  • Lighted compact mirror (to see if I have any of the under-eye mascara when I wake up)

If I’m driving

  • Laptop
  • CD’s with music or personal development and several podcasts with recent episodes
  • Headset for my cell phone for hands-free driving
  • Cell phone charger for the car
  • Protein bar or other easy-to-eat while driving snack
  • Sunglasses
  • Cash for incidentals and tolls
  • Insurance card

Important information to keep on your cell phone

  • Phone numbers to every major airline that I fly
  • Phone numbers to every major hotel chain that I stay with
  • Phone number of who I am going to meet
  • Phone number of the office where I’m going
  • Phone number for traffic updates (511 in the Florida area)
  • Phone number for AAA or other roadside assistance
  • ICE (In Case of Emergency) number with my husband’s contact information
